20 February 2017 – JOHANNESBURG – The Color Run, at the conclusion of its Rainbow Tour in Stellenbosch this weekend, announced its upcoming tour to the delight of Color Runners. The Superhero Tour will make its world debut in Soweto this April, and whoosh through the country over the next 12 months.

This season, The Color Run and its headline sponsor Capitec Bank, will bring something more than a single day’s worth of fun to its fans. The Superhero Tour aims to underpin the journey towards ongoing personal fulfilment and inner strength – it’s time we believe in the superhero in each and every one of us.

“We are encouraged by being a part of this movement that has inspired thousands to put on their tekkies, get active and support their communities across South Africa,” says Charl Nel, head of communications at Capitec Bank.

The Superhero Tour acknowledges the individual, and all the characteristics that define us as heroes. And, it applauds those nearest and dearest to us, and those further afield who inspire us and offer themselves as role models. “Not only are we inspiring participants to celebrate themselves, and those who have mentored, encouraged, and positively influenced them, but this season, we launch a mobile app, through Back A Buddy, which will make raising funds for the Color Runner’s charity of choice that much easier,” says Trevor Latimer, national event co-ordinator of The Color Run South Africa.

The upcoming tour was announced this weekend using a number of mechanisms, including Facebook Live, and a new social media campaign encouraging all the superheroes out there to share their personal stories of triumph and inspiration with The Color Run Family. “As part of the campaign, we announced a competition that will see our most inspiring superhero jetting off to an international event – one lucky hero will win an all-expenses paid trip for two to The Color Run in Paris in 2018.”

Since landing on South African shores 5 years ago, The Color Run has grown to become one of the most recognised and loved brands in the country. To date, The Color Run has brought smiles to millions of faces around the world, leading to its fun tag line “The Happiest 5K on the Planet”.

Latimer encourages existing and would be superheroes to start compiling their stories for sharing, consider their charities, and fly over to www.thecolorrun.co.za for more information on The Superhero Tour.

The Miss South Africa finalists – who are vying for the title of Miss South Africa 2017 – have received their R25 000 prize money as public voting intensifies ahead of the pageant next month.

The 12 women will compete to take top honours and wear the prestigious crown at the Sun City Superbowl on Sunday, March 26, in an event which will be televised live and simulcast on M-Net and Mzansi Magic.

There are a number of firsts for this year’s competition: Miss South Africa 2017 will receive R1-million in cash from sponsors Sun International and Cell C as well as a bouquet of prizes that will elevate the competition to one of the richest pageants in the world.

It is also the first time that the finalists have received a cash prize. All finalists are also able to take part in the 12-month Cell C internship programme should they choose to avail themselves of the opportunity once the Miss South Africa 2017 competition is over.

It is also the first time in the history of the Miss South Africa pageant, that members of the public have their say in who wins the prestigious title.

Anyone can enter the competition by sending an SMS with the key number of their favourite Top 12 finalist to the short code number, 45791. Each SMS will cost R1.50. Proceeds from the competition will benefit the Cell C Girl Child Bursary Fund. Up for grabs for five lucky voters is a weekend at The Palace at Sun City and VIP tickets to attend the live Miss South Africa pageant and after party at Sun City. For more information visit the Miss South Africa website http://www.misssa.co.za.

The finalists were delighted to receive the money this week in which a new portfolio of pictures of the finalists, taken at Sun City by renowned photographer Garreth Barclay, was released. Each explains what they plan to do with their windfall. (Names in alphabetical order with their unique key numbers for public voting).

Adè van Heerden (Herold’s Bay, Western Cape): “I am absolutely elated to receive the prize money. It’s important to be prepared in whatever you take on in life and I’ll be using this money to optimally prepare myself in becoming Miss South Africa. The pageant is ‘investing’ in my life and I want to be sure I use all my opportunities in returning that value by becoming the best version of myself.  I do plan on spoiling my sisters who are my support structure to a lovely dinner, just to say thank you for all their love.”

Boipelo Mabe (Alexandra, Gauteng): “I am so grateful for this gesture from our sponsors. For me it is a blessing and will enable me to further improve my life and impact on the world around me. I plan to use this money as part of capital investment for a start-up business that I would like to launch towards the end of the year.”

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (Sedgefield, Western Cape): “I am really grateful for the prize money that we have received from our sponsors. I believe knowledge is power and, as a young entrepreneur who wants to start her own business development company in the near future, I will use the prize money to further invest in my studies. Perhaps I’ll even get myself one really nice pair of shoes as well!”

Iman Mkwanazi (Lenasia, Gauteng): “I’m thankful to Sun International and Cell C for the prize money as it will assist many of us in the different routes we have chosen to take. I’ll be saving the money and using it to invest in my cleaning company in the near future. I will buy cleaning material and equipment.”

Kayla Malherbe (Mtunzini, Kwa Zulu Natal): “I am thrilled! I’d like to thank all the sponsors for the prize money we as Top 12 received. I’ll be putting this money into an investment account to save up for studying and for a car.”

Nicole van Niekerk (Môregloed, Pretoria, Gauteng): “I am really grateful for the investment Sun International and Cell C is making in South African women. Personally, I will reinvest this money in my own business to help me achieve my greater goals in the future.”

Nompumelelo Mampholo (Diepkloof, Soweto, Gauteng): “I certainly feel like I’ve won the lottery. I have never had R25 000 to my name so it’s very exciting.  I’m holding on to it for as long as I can. I’m putting it into a savings account.”

Odirile Sepeng (Mabopane, Pretoria, Gauteng): “I will invest into my ‘Mind Over Matter’ project, an initiative that is dedicated to empowering and meeting the needs of children and the youth in underprivileged schools. I am grateful for the opportunity and resources that Miss South Africa and Cell C has offered to us, thus enabling us to not only fulfil our purpose in life but to be active leaders in our communities as well.”

Priyeshka Lutchman (Yellowwood Park, Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal): “So far my Miss South Africa journey has been a great family adventure. Some of my prize money will be going to my parents – mum needs to make certain that our charity work to keep ensuring girls have sanitary towels continues and dad needs to keep me responsible and invest the rest. Oh, and a pair of shoes of course!”

Shané Naidoo (Benoni, Gauteng): “I feel very grateful for the R25 000 prize money! After visiting SARAC earlier this month, I’m inspired to donate a small portion of my prize money to my local SPCA. I’ll be putting the rest towards wardrobe preparations and marketing myself as we near the finale in March.”

Shelbe Pretorius (Pinehaven, Krugersdorp, Gauteng): “I am a firm believer in tithing 10% – if not more if you can – and I am currently working on care centre upliftment in my community so I plan on using some of the money towards my project (new mattresses for the kids to be more specific) and I also plan on spoiling my family.”

Yuta Raubenheimer (Kameeldrift, Pretoria, Gauteng): “I am truly thankful and ecstatic about the prize money that Miss South Africa has so generously given each finalist. My motto when it comes to finances is: give a little, save a little and spend a little and I intend doing just that.”

The Miss South Africa Pageant is a proud collaboration between Sun International and Cell C. Judges for the pageant include Maps Maponyane, Bridget Masinga and Ezra Davids, with more celebrity judges to be announced shortly.

DIAMONDS BEAT PROTEAS 62-46

Netball Quad Series: South African Proteas v Australian Diamonds

Durban, South Africa – The SPAR Proteas fought gallantly against the Australian Diamonds in their Quad Series match in Durban on Tuesday. Although the visitors beat them 62-46, it was the Proteas’ narrowest margin of defeat ever against the world champions.

The South Africans did not start well, and it was only in the fifth minute that they were able to score. Goal attack Vanes-Mari du Toit, playing for the Proteas for the first time since 2013, looked nervous and rusty, and muffed several shots at goal. Coach Norma Plummer took her off at the end of the first quarter, when Australia were leading by 17 goals to nine.

Lindie Lombard, who had such an impact on the match against England on Saturday, once again influenced proceedings when she came on for Du Toit. Plummer also brought veteran player Precious Mthembu on for Juline Rossouw at wing defence. Goal attack Karla Mostert has to leave the court because of a blood injury, and her presence was missed in the second and third quarters. By halftime, Australia had increased their lead to 11 goals (31-20) and it appeared the Diamonds might run away with the match.

In the third quarter, the Proteas seemed to lose focus and the Diamonds stretched their lead to 45-30, but in the final quarter, with Mostert back in action, the Proteas came back strongly, losing the quarter by just one goal, despite goalkeeper Phumza Maweni being sent off for two minutes, leaving Mostert alone in the circle.

Centre Erin Burger had an outstanding match, and was well supported by Mthembu and captain and wing attack Bongi Msomi.

Plummer said she was “quietly pleased” with the outcome of the match.

“We used to lose to Australia by more than 50 goals, and we got it down to 16,” she said.

“We’re in there – we just have to learn to be more consistent. There is still a lot of work to be done. We turned over some balls but there were times when we lost the ball in the circle, so there was no benefit from the turnovers.”

She said Du Toit was a very skilled player, but she had been out of netball for some time with an injury.

“I wanted to see how she played, because I want to see the depth of the players around the starting seven,” said Plummer.

She said it was important for the players to develop more muscle and power if they were to compete at the top level.

Australian coach Lisa Alexander said South Africa were closing in on the top teams.

“They need more control over their bodies, and they have to increase their mental toughness and resilience,” she said.

“But they are pushing the top teams. However, Australia, New Zealand and England are all fully professional, whereas the South Africans are amateurs.”

The Proteas leave for the United Kingdom on Wednesday for the final leg of the quad series. They will play New Zealand in London on Saturday night.

From 11 – 13 November, visitors will be taken on a tasteful three-day culinary extravaganza filled with local signature dishes from some of Durban’s most popular restaurants as well as gourmets dishes from critically acclaimed New Orleans-based chef, Kenneth Temple. Facilitated by Studio 54, the Essence EATS Culinary Festival, will showcase local restaurants and business owners through the incorporation of the ‘Flavours of Durban’ festival, a popular event on the Durban culinary calendar.

“What we hope to do is to create a local festival supported by locals which will allow enormous growth opportunities for our local chefs and caterers. With our experience of having run Flavours of Durban 2015 we believe the three-day food festival will not only attract new markets but also help grow food enterprises in Durban,” commented operations director of Studio 54, Gary Clayton.

Cooking up a storm

One of the celebrity chefs who will be giving demonstrations and imparting food knowledge is Chef Sherwyn Weaich, creator of The Gourmet Bushie Brand. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe and Africa cooking with both international chefs and the locals. He has featured in many high-profile culinary events and developed recipes and done brand placement for some of the country’s biggest names.

Indian cuisine, which is such a vital component to the culinary make-up of Kwa-Zulu Natal, will be well served by Hollywood, Cane Cutter, while Tati Kasi Grill, Max Lifestyle, and Keys Group will provide tasty Shisa Nyama menus.

Three establishments, Sondela Restaurant, Royal Kitchen and Food Expert Company, will serve a wide range of African cuisine. A Durban African caterer, Sister Cities Chefs, will provide a few of their own African delicacies which are sure to be a hit with both visitors and locals alike.

Those who favour more European-style food will also be catered for with Pizzetta, serving Italian cuisine, and Keys on Davenport offering experiential dining of the highest order.

Seafood is popular in this coastal paradise, too, and Fish on Florida is bound to hit the spot with its tasty offerings, fresh from the ocean.

Most of the restaurants will have their chefs on stage and cooking up a storm in demonstrations that will certainly whet the appetite.

Encouraging small hospitality enterprises

The festival won’t only be about food and chefs enjoying themselves, but a key element will be the launch of the Small Business Development Programme which is aimed at encouraging small hospitality enterprises.

One small eatery will be given guidance in terms of a day-to-day running of their restaurant. Clayton will spend two weeks at their stores helping with menu guidance and systems from a hospitality management perspective. The store will be given space on stage for a cooking demo.

The chosen enterprise will be trained in-house at one of the Keys restaurants and taught how to manage both front and back of house, look at financial planning and learn how to market their everyday business. The lucky operator will be given guidance in terms of menu creation, business systems control, hospitality management, performance targets, stock control, budgets and cost of sales and pricing.

JENNY MORRIS IS OUT TO ENTERTAIN AT THE DURBAN GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW

Jenny_Morris_FA_Wine_Pic_Copy.jpg

Jenny Morris – known to all her fans around the country as the Giggling Gourmet – is one of South Africa’s most-loved food personalities.  The popular celebrity chef – she has the distinction of being the first South African chef to host her own show on the international Food Network channel – will be appearing at the Good Food & Wine Show which takes place in Durban from 28-30 October.

Morris, who has just returned from a trip to Poland, admits that although she’s being doing the GF&WS for many years, she’s still excited to be a part of South Africa’s premiere food and wine event, saying: “I can’t wait, I love interacting with an audience.”

Morris also admits that Durban is one of her favourite local cities as it is the city where she was born and where “the people are always so hospitable and generous.”

Morris’s formula for success is to “entertain informatively and inform entertainingly”, something she does with flair. Although she has cooked for dozens of celebrities and royals, (including Prince Charles, Thabo Mbeki, Charlize Theron and Al Gore), Morris remains down to earth, and when she’s not wowing the public she can be found in her kitchen stirring a pot of something fragrant and delicious.

Last year Morris launched a best-selling cook book called ‘World Atlas of Food’ and, more recently, opened her own restaurant in Cape Town called ‘Yumcious’ which, she admits, keeps her on her toes.

Here the Goggling Gourmet answers a few questions …

Q: Can you tell us what you were doing recently in Poland?

Jenny Morris: I have a really wonderful following in Poland and I got invited to be a celebrity judge on Top Chef Polska.

Q: Why does Durban have such fond memories for you?

JM: I was born in Durban and my love of food was born in my parents vegetable gardens, we grew and ate only our own veggies, that’s when I fell in love with food that is fresh and seasonal. I still have family living in KZN and visit them when I do work in Durban. So I’m looking forward to seeing them in October.

Q: What has Durban contributed to SA cuisine?

JM: Durban has a wonderful mix of nationalities so the food is quite global, but I always associate Durban with bunny chow and a really fine curry. In fact when I visited my son Wade in London recently – on my way to Poland – the first thing I had to make him was a Durban curry.

Q: You do everything from TV and radio to cookery tours, demonstrations and writing books. Do you have a favourite?

JM:They are all my favourites, how can you ask me that! Let’s say I love to travel to new places, this gives me the inspiration to write my books and share my stories and experiences with the wonderful people who attend my food demonstrations.

Q: Tell us a bit about Yumcious – your restaurant in Cape Town.

JM:  I spend almost evey night of my life dreaming up recipes, I can almost taste the colours, textures and flavours in my dreams they are so real. I needed an outlet other than my cooking school – The CooksPlayground – to turn these recipes into reality. I wanted to serve, what I call, ‘Fine Casual Food’ to lots of people; the food is just that. My ‘Kilo Table’ always has new and exciting, hot and cold seasonal dish and lots of
interesting healthy salads.

Q: What kitchen utensils can you not live without?

JM: A really sharp knife, my pestle and mortar, my microplane AND the “Best Pan in the World”

Q: How, as a chef, do you stay on top of what’s popular or do you determine what’s popular?

JM: I have my own style and I create my own dishes and flavours but I listen to people and I like to give them what they want as well.

Q: What else do you still want to achieve?

JM: I want to watch my children grow and prosper; I want to inspire and nurture the young chefs going forward; I want to write more cook books, travel and taste the world and make more food TV shows; I want to make my Jenny Morris Range of wines and restaurant internationally accessible. I want to live to a ripe old age with my husband and I want a grey Tom cat too!

Road to MAMA set the Umlazi Township  on fire last night!!!

By: Shadrack Tolonga

Durban- The road that always leads to the MTV Africa Music Awards once again came to the city of Durban. The event had promised to be bigger and better, that was witnessed by many because the stage was definitely larger and greater than last year’s one. The event changed venue to one of Durban’s hottest hangout eYadini Lounge, Umlazi. The Road to MAMA which took place on Sunday 25 September (eYadini’s eighth birthday!). Was staged by many great South Africa artist and Djs.

The hip hop superstar who headlined the show was Anati, who made an early appearance, but the crowd loved his performance throughout. The Durban based rapper Aewon Wolf also graced the stage for the second year running and “Back to the Beach” hit maker Kyle Deutsch gave an outstanding performance that was endured a lot by the ladies.

Various house and hip hop Djs alleviated the moods of the fans by creating miraculous acts on the deck. Gagasi fm’s very own Junior De Rocka gave the fans the nostalgic feeling by playing the old skool hip hop music with a blend of the new.

MAMA 2016 lines up performers

The stage came alive even more when the Wololo hit maker Babes Wodumo started performing with her astonishing dance moves that made the male fans drop down their jaws.  The fans illustrated their love for her by singing and chanting to her music.

The night proceeded with the likes of the legendary Kwaito star Professor who also jumped onto the stage performing some of his amazing hits. The “Imoto Entshonsh imali” hit maker took the time to say to his fellow brother Mandoza to Rest in Peace and that he will forever be missed. While many fans also wished the same, they couldn’t withheld the excitement of dancing to the late Mandoza’s hit Nkalakatha which was also frequently played through the show in paying last respect to the late Kwaito star.
